How I’ve grown, what I’ve learned...

Here at Iowa State I have grown a lot.  Making  new friends, learning new things, and learning how to be independent.  Time management was a huge problem for me, now that I have gotten settled in with college life I am much better at it.  I have also matured a lot while here in college.  Learning how to live on my own and doing my own laundry and being punctual to class are just a few ways I have grown.

Being a Hixson Scholar has been and will be an awesome experience. My peer mentors have been great and I have learned a lot.  I hope some day I can be one and teach incoming scholars the same things they have taught me.

It is truly hard to believe my first semester at Iowa State is almost over.  But on the bright side this is just the begging of my adventure at Iowa State!

What it means to be a Hixson Scholar

First off I want to thank Christina Hixson again on offering me the chance to receive the award.  Being a Hixson Scholar means so much to me.  I am truly blessed to have received this award.  When I received the letter and found out I was a Hixson Scholar you couldn't believe how overcome with joy I was. This award will help me achieve my goal and my dream to attend Iowa State and find qualities that I never knew I had.  It is amazing that one woman can help out 100 kids to fulfill their dreams to succeed.  It will push me to be my best, knowing someone has the trust in me to utilize the scholarship to my scholastic needs.

Being apart of my group Grey for now, has been an awesome time.  We all like being around eachother and we all have a good time.  I am sure we will continue to keep in touch.  Thanks again and God Bless.

Social Meida

Social Media is all around us.  The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue.  Some things I learned about social media is that it is always changing every second.  It requires you to be really aware of what is going on, and you always have to be on top of your game.  Another thing I learned is you can find out more about a business way easier.  Sometimes it felt repeatable at times though.  I was really excited to partake in this particular medium.  It was something new I have never done before.  Social media can help you reach your goals by helping you find your business easier and being able to look up and read information about that company.  If you wanted to reach your company you can find all that information online.  Facebook is also is a big part of social media.  With Facebook you can find company's information easier.  Social Media is a huge part in today's world.  Everyday there are more and more ways of interacting through social media.

MBTI What?

The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in the behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.
-Isabel Myers

What I learned about myself through the MBTI is that I focus my attention on the outer world of people and things.  This is called extraversion.  I take in information through the five senses, with a focus on the here and now.  I like to make my decsisions mostly on the basis of logic and objective analysis.  When it comes to dealing with the world throught either judging or perceiving I like to judge what I am doing. Taking a planned and oraganized approach to life.  These qualities all relate to my goals in the fact that this is the way I am going to learn and how I want to set my goals for the future.  A couple things surprised me about my MBTI test was the fact how percise it is.  Another thing that surprised me was the fact that it can take you through a small series of questions to figure out what personality type you are.  It makes me be better informed how I perform in my everyday life.  It will help with my scholastic studies as well.  Some of the the aspects of my personality I had not thought about were how I think.  Whether it was though analysis or logic, it made me aware on how I really think of things.

Thank you for your time

"Best" Moment

First off my name is Cole Schlitzer and I am the 2011 Dubuque County Hixson.  I grew up on a 425 acre dairy farm.  Milked about 100 dairy holstein cows twice a day.  Played football, basketball, baseball, and tennis in high school and loved it.  Big sports fanatic and glad I'm a Cyclone!

Everyone at one point in time has a “best” moment, in which they were their very best. For me this “best” moment was when I played high school football. Every time I would step onto that field on a Friday night, I would love every minute of it. The feeling is great, knowing that everyone came to watch your team. Boy will I miss those days. Now that I am in college I can translate that feeling of preparation and accomplishment into my first college semester.

Since I was young I have always had the love for sports. I would always be the kid that had to win everything. I’ve been very competitive with everything that I do and work hard doing so. My favorite sport to play was and will always be football. Any chance that I would get I would be tossing the football around with friends. I played football in high school all four years. Putting in countless hours of practice and working out, so come game day I was ready.

Football season was the best. The positions that I played were wide receiver, corner-back, and punted. One of my best putting games was vs Cedar Rapids Xavier. I had one punt that went for 63 yards. I ended up putting that game ten times that game! Average 34.5 yards. The best receiving game for me was vs Decorah. That is when I had my first touchdown catch of my high school career. I had nine catches. Feels good to be at your best on the field and knowing all the hard work you put into it.

Now that I am in college I am ready to take all of the challenges head on. Football and all the sports I have played in high school will help me with some of these challenges. Being able to be a hard worker in college is key to have, because it makes you focus on school. With being involved with a team you have to work hard everyday in practice in order to be good at it. This goes hand and hand with school the harder you work the more successful you will be.
